Annual Exams Q&A

Why are annual exams important?

Scheduling a gynecological examination every year allows the Georgia Obstetrics and Gynecology experts to check on the health of your feminine organs and catch any issues early when they are easiest to treat.

Because they provide an opportunity to diagnose and address infections, abnormalities, and diseases, these appointments can be life-saving.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends scheduling your annual exam (also called a well-woman visit) once reaching adulthood, between 18-21, or at least three years after becoming sexually active, if not sooner.

If you have troublesome symptoms, however, you don’t have to wait for your annual exam to get answers — the Georgia Obstetrics and Gynecology experts can help diagnose pelvic pain or irregularities promptly.

What can I expect from a well-woman exam?

Physical exams include a breast exam, an internal and external pelvic exam, a urine sample, and a Pap smear.

Breast exam

During this quick exam, your provider manually checks your breasts for discharge, thickening, or lumps. They can also instruct you on how to do self-examinations.

Pelvic exam, cervical exam, and Pap smear

After changing into a dressing gown, you get comfortable on an examination table with a sheet for additional privacy. Your provider visually checks your vulva and labia for redness, swelling, or cysts.

They then use a speculum to gently create some space between the vaginal walls and examine your cervix for any atypical discharge, irritations, or symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). They take a sample of cervical cells (Pap smear) to test for cervical cancer or cell abnormalities and then remove the speculum.

Bimanual exam

To check your internal organ health, your provider carefully inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into your vagina while pressing on your stomach. They aim to minimize any discomfort.

Urine sample

A urine sample provides information on your kidney health and whether you are pregnant or fighting an infection. It may not be necessary during your exam, depending on your current health.

What questions should I ask during my annual exam?

Think about what your health goals are and approach your annual exam accordingly. With your essential screenings taken care of, are there any preventive measures you should take? Do you have any current symptoms that trouble you, such as irregular periods, incontinence, or other issues?

This is an ideal time to discuss birth control options, pregnancy and fertility counseling, and vaccinations, such as the HPV vaccine.

If you have any pain or irregularities that you can’t explain, be sure to talk to your provider. The team of specialists is available to help you with whatever issues arise.
